A bill signed into law two years ago by Governor Terry Branstad will require all homes and apartments in Iowa to have carbon monoxide detectors by July 1.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas byproduct of fuel-burning heaters, fireplaces, and gas stoves. The Center for Disease Control reports that over 400 people died of cO2 poisoning in 2015 alone.

Iowa Fire Marshal's will perform inspections to ensure folks are in compliance.

Detectors can often be bought partnered with smoke detectors.
