They've been happening for so long now that they seem routine, but there is nothing commonplace about filling an airplane with veterans and sending them on, what for many, is a once-in-a-lifetime trip to our nation's capital to see memorials to their service.

There are larger, more ceremonious events we undertake to thank those who have served, but Honor Flights are purely about them - about giving them an experience.

Another Honor Flight left Quad City International Airport this morning for D.C. Two more are planned for later this year.

As with all altruistic endeavors, the funds for these flights don't come from thin air. The Honor Flight of the Quad Cities group raises funds from individuals and businesses to fund these trips.

I can't think of a better way to honor a veteran than making a donation to ensure these flights can continue.

You can make a donation, or apply for a veteran you know to make the flight, at the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities website, here.
