Short term pain for long term gain. That's a mantra I keep repeating anytime I have to go to downtown Bettendorf or Moline lately.

Road closures, lane shifts, detours. They are all symptoms of construction that will result in a shiny, new I-74 bridge in three years time. That's what I keep telling myself.

The latest round of construction begins today in downtown Moline at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 19th Street. Lane closures will prevent westbound traffic from accessing eastbound I-74 as the median is removed. Next week, the entire intersection will close until December.

Make sure you leave yourself extra time to sit in traffic to access the bridge every morning. And remember... "shiny, new bridge. Shiny new bridge."
